Introducing Hot Mat Pilates to our schedule

Alongside the success of our Inferno HIIT Pilates class, we are introducing Hot Mat Pilates to our weekly schedule, starting Thursday 27th February, 9:30am.

Hot Mat Pilates is the classical mat series, with over 500 exercises, as developed by Joseph Pilates, with a contemporary attitude. Mat work came before any of the Pilates Apparatus (equipment) were developed or introduced. These mat exercises test and build your core control, spinal articulation, ability to stabilise, mobilise and lengthen your muscles. The class is open to everyone from beginners to advanced students, as the exercises cannot only build in difficulty, but every exercise can be modified to decrease or increase the level of challenge. As you progress in your practice, you will notice improvements in breathing, focus, stress management, and body awareness.

How does Hot Mat Pilates differ to Inferno HIIT Pilates? IHP is based on pilates principles, but is a high intensity interval training class. In IHP, alongside some mat pilates exercises, rounds of cardio will also be included.

The classes we have on offer at the studio complement each other, focusing on functional movement and fitness, and we encourage you to try them all.

We look forward to seeing you soon in one of our classes, and thank you for being a part of our community – our community is really at the heart of our studio.

Namaste!

June ’19 News

A warm hello to our community! We hope you are enjoying your time at the studio, and look forward to seeing you more in the hot room as the cooler months set in. We’ve added two state-of-the-art humidifiers to the hot room (you may have noticed the extra mist inside!), ensuring that we are still getting our sweat on each time we step on our mats for Bikram or Inferno Hot Pilates. Our Yin classes are still on every Thursday at 6:30pm, and Sundays at 6pm, our monthly silent class is on the last Sunday morning at 7am, and our Kundalini workshops have been added to the schedule every month now, by popular demand. We are even looking to at putting them on fortnightly, so please let us know if this is something you’re interested in.

We’d be so grateful as well if you could please post and check in on your social media when you come to class. Did you know, Before Yogananda died in 1952 he whispered to his student- “something called social media is coming… and if you don’t post and check in, it’s the same as not doing savasana at the end of class” but worse 😉  Help us promote our family business, we really appreciate it from the bottom of our hearts.

Thank you to our teachers, for the knowledge and care you share to your students in your classes, carrying them through from start to end, and helping them feel better in themselves and their bodies. Thank you to our angels, for keeping our studio clean and tidy for everyone to enjoy! And thank you to our students, for coming to the studio and taking positive action towards being the best version of themselves possible. You are a big inspiration!

See you at the studio soon! Love Sherry and the team at BYNB xx

June Special – Members can bring a friend for free to our Yin or Inferno Hot Pilates Class

We invite our members to bring a friend complimentary to one our Yin or Inferno Hot Pilates class. It must be your friend’s first time to our studio.

Thinking of doing two Bikram classes in one day? Here is how to pace yourself:

Back to Back

So you’re going to do a double, good for you! There are two kinds of doubles that you could do: back to back (only 1/2 hour between classes) and a split double (one in the morning, one in the afternoon/evening.)

– Take it easy in your first class, pace yourself. Gently remind yourself that you are doing a double during the class. It can help give you perspective and keep focus. If you didn’t get through standing bow without falling out a lot, remind yourself that you are going to be doing it again in the next class, so don’t sweat it, just take note of what you want to focus on the next time. As it’s coming right up!

-Second class you may notice you’re more flexible. You might have more energy or you might be fatigued. Just notice how you are feeling and listen to your body. The second class usually feels as if it goes by quickly.

– Have something to drink in between classes that will replenish electrolytes and give you a little sugar. Fresh juice or coconut water is ideal. You might even try raw dates (just one or two), they digest very quickly and provide immediate fuel for your body to burn. Some people can even have a banana or some fruit, just not a lot – and give yourself at least 15 mins before the next class is going to start. Don’t ingest any protein or large amounts of fiber (like a smoothie) as it can take your body a while to break this down.

– Eat a fresh and balanced meal afterwards to replenish electrolytes and drink more water than usual.

Split Double

– Replenish your electrolytes after your first class. Drink water throughout the day. Set a goal of maybe two or three liters before your next class. Don’t drink it all at once!

-Try not to eat a really large meal in between your morning and evening classes. Try a couple of small meals instead. Have a snack two or three hours before taking your second class. Make it a healthy one. (nuts, fruit, veggies)

– The second class can be a bit of wild card depending on what you did with your day in between classes. Some people will feel more flexible others may feel rather tight in places they didn’t expect. Just take it one posture at time. Remember something you did in your morning class that worked for you and see if you can bring your attention to it.

-Have a juice/electrolyte drink or smoothie waiting for you after your second class.

Doubles in general:

-Avoid drinking alcohol on days that you are going to, or have done a double.
-Avoid excessive caffeine. (skip the afternoon latte before your second class!)
-Get to bed early the night before.
-Be proud of yourself!

They’re not as scary as your mind makes them out to be!

All Mums practice for free this Mothers Day! Or if you are a Mum. bring your daughter =)

Mothers Day is just around the corner and while a big hug and tender kiss are usually enough for her, it’s always a great idea to spoil her with something special on this date to show much appreciation for all she’s done for us. Sure chocolates and flowers are nice, but how about trying something different this year? Something more useful that lasts longer and she can use frequently. Something that makes her feel like the gorgeous woman she is; or something that enhances her lifestyle but at the same time, won’t break the bank.

If she happens to be a dedicated yogi, then she’ll definitely like one of these ideas specially tailored for yoga mums. Just remember to compliment them with a big hug and tender kiss too!

  • Yoga Mats – An easy and amazing gift for any Mum that practices Yoga; it’s always a yoga accessory she may need or one that is getting old and needs to be replaced. Our mats are top notch and we also have mat bags to carry them to and from class in!
  • Yoga Book – A book about yoga or spirituality is something that could have a long lasting effect on your Mum; it can improve her practice, enhance her yoga journey, and create inspiration in her day to day living. There are many options to choose from.
  • Yoga Clothes – Mum deserves to look sharp and feel comfortable at the studio. There is no such thing as ‘too many’ yoga pants, so its always a safe choice. She could also use a sweater for these colder days; a yoga top to feel good in her favourite asana; or shorts to help her move freely.
  • A yoga pass – we have everything from introductory passes to monthly passes and sessions packs! Introduce Mum to the wonderful practice of yoga, pilates and meditation, or if she’s already a regular, save her on her next payment. She’ll love it! Who doesn’t love see Mum happy, relaxed and glowing after her yoga class?
  • A private yoga class – This is a great opportunity for Mum to go deeper into her practice with one-on-one attention and hands on correction.
  • Practice class with her – She’ll most probably like at least one of the previous ideas; any present is a good way to show that you thought of her! However, spending quality time with Mum is something she will love and make her smile more than any object or subscription you can find. Hop on the mat and enjoy yoga class by her side – remember that all Mum’s (or daughters, if you are already a mum) practice for free this Mothers Day!

Topic of the month: You’re body’s “Powerhouse”: What is it?

Inferno Hot Pilates is a High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) with low impact, based on Pilates principles. In class we spend a lot of time strengthening not only the abdominal muscles, but the lower back muscles, the glutes, the muscles around your hips, and the pelvic floor. These muscles work together to create a supportive corset for the trunk of your body. As a group, we refer to these muscles as your “Powerhouse”.

The term “Powerhouse” was created by Joseph Pilates to describe the place in the body from where all movement and energy stems. All movement should begin from the center and move outward to the limbs. It is the Powerhouse that gives us energy, strength, stability and control.

When we strengthen the muscles of the Powerhouse, our posture becomes supported and our shoulders can relax. Our chest opens, allowing it to expand and contract easily with the breath. The neck and head are aligned and can move more freely, and it relieves stress in the hips, legs and feet. So in your next Hot Pilates class, when the instructor tells you to squeeze your bum and tighten up your glutes, pelvic floor, and stomach, tighten them up and find your center!
